"Morning, dude," Bender said, slapping me on the back. You want some maté?
"Uh, sure." I said. "What is it?"
"A miracle tea," Simshaw answered as he poured steaming water into a small tan gourd filled with green grass and a silver straw.
"People drink it in South America instead of coffee," he continued. "They call it yerba maté, (pronounced YER-bah MAH-tay). It's the secret to life. They say it clears the mind, heals the body, fights cancer ... makes you leap off stupid-high cliffs in a single bound."
"Guayaki Maté is one of our sponsors. You don't think we could go this big if we were drinking coffee everyday, do you?"
When I heard about the cliff jump, I figured Bender had just smoked waaay too much of that legendary Oregon kind bud ... which he probably has ... but as I sat on the counter in Simshaw's kitchen--the walls lined with epic shots of snowboarders, mountain bikers, and skiers, hucking HUGELY insane air--I tuned into their secret weapon: yerba maté.
The Subby skids to a stop at the top of the mountain pass and, as we unload the bikes, Simshaw fires up the camp stove for an afternoon maté session. As he fills our gourds, he explains how they have gone through a few different bikes trying to find one that can push the envelope as hard as they are.
"We need the light saber of letter openers to do this stuff, man," Sim says. "We're doing things most people don't even believe are possible, and no one gets it. The bike industry just isn't keeping up with freeriding. They're still hung up on the racing model. Hopefully, they'll wake up one day and smell the maté."
Today is a trial run on the bike that Bender will use for the cliff launch: A full-suspension Specialized FSR. Bender drops one steep chute after another, hucks off of a few rocks, and by the end of the day declares the bike ready for the jump.
The following morning after another breakfast of maté, nutbutter, and Floater, Bender is sitting in the cockpit of his FSR, leaning against a tree on top of a cliff. I walk to the edge and peer into space. The launch is bigger than a three-story building. If I were to just run and leap off iwithout the assistance of suspension I would shatter my spine and more body parts than I'm sure I'm even aware exist. The voice in the back of my head kicks in again, this time sounding like a television announcer: "Remember kids ... don't try this at home."
I join Sim at the bottom of the cliff and watch in tense apprehension as he starts the camera rolling and yells: "Loopy Lu dude! ... Go big or go home."
Moments later I hear the soft crunch of Bender's tires rolling towards the edge of infinity and he's airborne, dropping like a satellite on re-entry. He lands on both wheels midst the sound of snapping metal and the buzz of his front wheel bottoming out on the frame. The bike stopped instantly and sent Bender tumbling over the bars down the rocky slope.
Though Bender essentially "lands" it, which is to say he doesn''t die, the jump is far more than the FSR can handle. The rear suspension pivot snaps on impact. Bender comes up a little bloody but, miraculously, alive. Sim smiles like a photographic monk. The moment has been captured on film and the implications could be vast: the biggest cliff huck ever shot. Now, maybe, the industry will pay attention and Team Maté will get a bike that can go the distance.
Go big or go home, indeed.
